I want to help you find the Best Therapist In Maryland For you
You know how that old saying that admitting you need help is the hardest step? Perhaps the folks that made up that saying haven’t tried to find a therapist lately. It can be a tough task.
There are real needs that you have in finding someone, plus things that are really important to you about making sure that person is the right fit for you. It can be like trying to solve two different 1,000 piece puzzles with all the pieces jumbled in one big pile. Let’s maybe sort some of those pieces out.
Tip #1: Find A Maryland therapist That MEets Your Needs
First, think about the biggest priorities you have in finding someone—the needs that are most crucial to meet. Do you really need someone that can provide Telehealth services to reduce barriers of travel time, transportation or other issues? Or are you doing caregiving at home all the time and really need someone that offers in-person appointments so you can have total privacy and protected time for your sessions? Think about other big priority needs: Do you need someone now or can you wait a few weeks or a month for an opening with someone that’s a great fit? Do you need someone that can provide sessions more frequently than once a week, to provide the most helpful level of support? What are your needs around language? Are there times of day or days of the week that are impossible for you to make, due to other obligations you have? It’s hard to find someone that is going to meet every one of your needs, wants and preferences, so it’s a good idea to start with the highest priority needs first and explore where you have some flexibility around wants and preferences.
Tip #2: Find A Maryland Therapist that understands your issues
Now that we have the big needs prioritized, it’s important to get clarity on what you are looking for support around so that you can be sure to find someone that can give you the help and support you deserve. You might know what that is—you want help with anxiety or depression or navigating a big transition in life or substance use or all kinds of thing. Sometimes we don’t exactly know what the problem is but we know that things aren’t working well and we need help to figure out what’s going on and how to move forward. That’s ok! Clarity in this situation can look like communicating what’s not going well and how that’s showing up in your life: “I can’t seem to get myself to do the things that I used to love and know would probably be good for me to do again”; “I’m losing my temper over every little thing, even when it’s not really a big deal”; “There is no OFF button for me and I can’t just chill, even though I’m exhausted”. It might be super important to you to have a therapist of a particular race, gender, faith or sexual orientation. Get as much clarity on all of this as you can so you can know who you are looking for!
Once you have these first two parts clarified, start searching because you now know enough to describe what you are looking for. Ask people you know if they know of a good therapist. Ask your primary care doctor or other health care provider for their suggestions. Browse online directories, like Psychology Today or Therapy Den, that will allow you to narrow your search with your specific criteria. If you are open to Telehealth appointments you aren’t limited to therapists right in your town. You can find a good fit from a bigger pool of therapists that are licensed in your state. Build a list of some possible options that you are willing to investigate further.
Tip #3: Find A Maryland Therapist that gets you
This is where you get a real feel for whether or not a potential therapist might be a good fit for you. Take your list of possibilities that you made in the last step and get to know these therapists a little more. Check out their websites. Read their blogs or articles. Do you like they way they communicate? Do they seem to have some experience in what you are dealing with? Still seeming like it’s maybe a good fit? Reach out to them. See what it feels like to communicate with them by email or phone. Ask questions! See if they really do fit your needs and your most important wants. Many therapists will offer a free, brief consultation call so you can do this investigation and vibe check. Not sure about the fit? Make a few different calls and compare. Even then, you don’t have to make a final decision. If you decide to set up an initial appointment, you’ll get a lot more of an idea of what it is like to work with someone. Tune into your own experience of working with that therapist at that first session. If it doesn’t feel right, it is ok to say so! You deserve support that works for you. There is no way that every therapist is right for every client. Even if it takes you a few initial appointments with different therapists, it can be worth it to find the right fit since therapy can be most effective and efficient when there is a good fit between the client and the therapist. You want the best path from where you are now to where you want to end up.
